Abstract

Purpose: To determine efficacy of the dextrose-coated pacifier for relieving pain in preterm infants.

Method: In a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest and a crossover trial, pain was assessed in 98 preterm infants using the PIPP following three randomly ordered interventions during heel lnace. Collected data were analyzed with the SPSS program(Ver. 11.0) using Chi-square test, One-way ANOVA, and Tukey post hoc.

Result: Pain responses of the dextrose-coated pacifier group and the pacifier group are different from that of the control groups significantly(p=.000), with the lowest PIPP scores in the dextrose-coated pacifier group. Pain physiologic responses(Heart rate & SpO2) of the dextrose-coated pacifier group is different from those of the pacifier group and the control group significantly(Heart rate: p=.003, SpO2: p.=022). Heart rate and SpO2 changes of the dextrose-coated pacifier group is less than others with Tukey post hoc. Pain behaviour responses(Brow bulge, Eye squeeze, Nasolabial furrow) of the dextrose-coated pacifier group and the pacifier group are different from that of the control group significantly(Brow bulge: p=.001, Eye squeeze: p=.000, Nasolabial furrow : p=.000).

Conclusion: The dextrose-coated pacifier shows pain relief effect. Accordingly, the dextrose-coated pacifier should be applied nursing intervention for pain management as heel lances in preterm infants
